Looking through the 1930 catalog, itвЂ™s apparent that all 3 floor-standing cabinet types share the same basic design. Regardless, several rounds of clamping and gluing got them stabilized. I usually attribute that symptom to water damage, but since both the top and bottom boards were affected, my hypothesis is that the adhesive in the plywood just degraded over the decades. Both were made of plywood, and the plies had lost their lamination. The two interior horizontal shelves needed more serious repair.

Rather, I sanded off some of the worst lacquer alligatoring, touched up a few chipped spots with stain, evened out a few other sections with toner lacquer, and then gave the whole thing a lacquer top coat. After a thorough cleaning, it was evident that the original finish had held up well, and there was no justification for a total re-finishing. Work on the radio cabinet was rather straightforward. It included the original Utah-branded dynamic speaker, although all 4 wires to the original speaker had been cut. The radio was dirty, with a few rust spots to the metal chassis and dings to the wooden cabinet, but was overall in good condition, with no missing parts. A Capehart-branded permanent magnet speaker, in bad shape, probably salvaged from a 1950вЂІs combo set or something similar.A few extra vacuum tubes (of the correct types).
